»Thus, it would seem that in medieval Karnataka as much as in medieval Europe, the very ethos of the warrior allowed the use of force and might against those of lower status. The moral code proclaimed the duty of the warrior to protect women and property of his village and his lord but the women and property of the enemy was fair game. The devaluation of ravished and violated women meant very often that they were not acceptable to their family members and they were carried off to serve as concubines or slaves to the victor. The fact that references to prostitutes whether attached to the temple or royal harem or even to the household of a local chief, multiplies after the eleventh century is a significant fact.«
